The Virginia Tech a cappella group, Mixed Emotions also known as MEMO, held their fall concert at The Lyric Theatre Saturday night. The show titled, “Now Playing,” featured songs ranging from pop hits to classics such as Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight.”

To play along with the theme of the show, the vocalists dressed as a variety of movie and television characters during the first act.

In years past, the group has chosen darker and more serious themes, but according to sophomore member, Madelyn Hart, this year they wanted to lighten the mood which is why they chose “Now Playing.”

While there are four a cappella groups on Virginia Tech’s campus, Hart believes it is the tight-knit community that sets Mixed Emotions apart.

“We have this big community. It’s definitely a family. I could tell them anything and they would support me the same,” said Hart.

The evidence of community showed through the support in the audience from MEMO alumni as well as a special performance at the end to “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5.

“One thing that is unique about Mixed Emotions is that we really focus on blending and hearing all the people around you,” said Hart.

A performance like this is not possible without practice. The group rehearses two hours a day, three times a week. In weeks leading up to the final show, the group will rehearse a minimum of ten hours.

To keep up with the group visit their Facebook page and visit Youtube for past performances. Their spring performance will be on April 21, 2018.
